REV. GARY SELLARS

Rev. Gary Sellars grew up in the Haughville area of Indianapolis where he attended Indianapolis Public Schools #45 and #63. He attended St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church and gave his life to Christ at the age of 13.

Rev. Sellars graduated from George Washington High School in June 1968. He then attended Indiana University for two years before being inducted into the United States Marine Corps for three years, where he served in the Vietnam War. He attended seminary classes at Central Theological Seminary and Simmons Theological Seminary he has a B. A. and a Master’s in Theology.

Gary Sellars was united in holy matrimony to Jellena Sechrest on November 30, 1975. This union was blessed with two children, Larry and Dacia.  Rev. and Sister Sellars are now blessed with two Granddaughters, Elisha and Laria.

Rev. Sellars announced his call to the ministry August 1978 and preached his first sermon and received his license to preach September 1978 at South Calvary Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Leo Sneed.  On February 18, 1979, he and his family united with Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. Robert Barnette.  Rev. Sellars was voted as acting Pastor on August 19, 1983, following the retirement of Rev. Barnette.  He was officially voted in as Pastor on November 18, 1983.

Rev. Sellars served as Recording Secretary of the Indiana State Missionary Baptist Association for 3 years.  He was the Chairman of the Ministers and Deacons conference for two years.  Working in the Capitol City Fellowship Missionary Baptist Association District, he served as 3rd Vice Moderator for four years.  He currently holds the position of First Vice President of the Indiana Missionary Baptist State Convention.

Several aspects of programs have flourished under his leadership at Mount Pleasant.  These include, but are certainly not limited to, administering the Lord’s Supper to the sick and shut in members, programs with the Indiana Women's Prison, Sheffield Nursing Home, and the Historical Society.

It is our prayer that Rev. Sellars and his family will continue to grow in grace as they serve the Lord at Mount Pleasant through teaching, preaching, fellowship, and worship together.
